Those of you on the mailing list should have noticed that I've been sending test messages out recently. I'll probably do another round or two of this as I remove bad entries from the mailing list. I don't know why individuals are getting the bounced mail messages, they should come only to me. Such are the wonders of electronic mail. So, for the time being, ignore these messages. I'm trying to fix things. I'm installing new gateway code and am trying to automate the list maintenance. I think that I was probably the first to spot the pattern The problem appears to be a combination of 2 things: 1) someone in South Africa has had his account removed without first mailing Marty (AKA kites-request@das.harvard.edu) and asking to be un-subscribed (no-doubt this is a frequent problem that Marty must face. 2) The Mail system sends the bounce message to the wrong place - to the person who wrote the message rather then the gateway administrator, so Marty doesn't even get to know that there is a problem until we figure it out and tell him. Marty is on the case now. I think that this should serve to remind us all thet rec.kites may be free, but it's not cheap - there are quite a few people out here who are contributing considerable time and effort in administration: maintaining the gateway, maintaining the archives and maintaining the FAQ's. Seems like Inspector Clousseau has been successful then because the bounces have stopped now ( I hope ). > I think that this should serve to remind us all thet rec.kites > may be free, but it's not cheap - there are quite a few people > out here who are contributing considerable time and effort in > administration maintaining the gateway, maintaining the archives > and maintaining the FAQ's. > They deserve our thanks from time to time. They sure do - salt of the earth these folks :-) rec.kites is not cheap if mail bounces into your mailbox and you have to pay for incoming mail - although our charges have just dropped to $10 a Meg from $15 - so the bounces must have cost me a staggering 30cents or more :-) BTW I hear that Australia is to begin charging individual users for Internet traffic - "user pays" systems are growing.
