I've seen a large increase in the number of people on the mailing list. Here are a few tips for newcomers: 1. Use hard carriage returns in your postings. What does this mean? Many PC and MAC programs do automatic line wrapping (when you get to the end of a line, the program puts the next word at the beginning of the next line). When the mail message is sent out, the line is transmitted as one long line rather than many shorter lines. Usually this is okay, but some mail readers and some mail delivery programs don't deal with long lines very well. The result is either a truncated message, or non-delivery of a mail message. 2. Don't send individual mail back to the news system or to the mailing list. Make sure that you are sending stuff do the actual sender of the message. 3. Avoid sending long messages. A good limit is probably around 5000 characters. Longer messages can cost money to rec.kite readers. What you should do is to announce the availability of something if it is really long. You can then mail things out to people who request a copy of your item, or you can place the item on one of the archive sites. 4. Remember that you can't see facial expressions or hear intonation differences on the net. Make sure you don't give offense and be careful not to take offense over things written in the net. 5. Requests for changes for folks on the mailing list should be sent to: kites-request@das.harvard.edu 6. Messages intended for rec.kites can be sent to: kites@das.harvard.edu -- Marty Sasaki Harvard University Sasaki Kite Fabrications sasaki@noc.harvard.edu Network Services Division 26 Green Street 617-496-4320 10 Ware Street Jamaica Plain, MA 02130 Cambridge, MA 02138-4002 phone/fax: 617-522-8546 = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = =
