What defines a great festival? Sunny, warm (but not too warm), decent wind, and *lots* of space. We had almost all of our single line kites flying all day. Towards the end of the day, I noticed that Irving's parafoil had fallen into a small tree on the other side of the parking lot. I got the kite out of the tree without much trouble, and went over to work on rolling up the line. Another kite flier was already rolling up the wind sock (100 ft long and 1ft diameter) that was on the line. I thanked her a bunch for helping me and continued packing up the foil. As I bent down to roll up the line. I heard two small children saying, "Bye, bye snake. Bye, bye snake." I looked up and they were intently watching the wind sock being rolled up, and waving goodbye. So I asked them, "Do you think it looks like a snake?" (dumb question, right?) "Well, a snake or a worm or a caterpillar," they smartly replied. "It's pretty long," I said. "Which do you think is longer, a snake, a worm, or a caterpillar?" "A snake," was the firm answer. "You know, we sometimes call it a sock. Who do you think would wear a sock like that?" They had to think about that one. "A penguin," the girl finally asserted. The boy gave her a strange look and then agreed, so they demonstrated how penguins walk and laughed. By this time, I had unclipped the line from the parafoil. The boy picked up the snap swivel. I asked him, "Do you think that if you held on and I pulled on the line you would fly in the air?" "No," he said in that adults-sure-can-be-dumb voice. But after a moment, he started running away from me still holding the end of the line. He was pretty sure nothing would happen, but he just had to try...
