Before I try this out; - how many spikes are used, - are there any problems with line breakages - should I change my line? thanks ___________ deon kallis Deon, The practice is called "Solo flying" or "dogstaking" (named for using a spiral wound ground stake used for tying out the family dog). You only need one stake. Use a well polished carabiner or hook the lines through the handle of the stake to effect the pivot point for the lines. I've used small pulleys to prevent line wear, but your lines will do ok if you keep them clean. Lee Sedgewick is credited with the discovery of the technique. To begin, fly the kite as you normally would, then pass the lines through the hook. Walk DOWNWIND of the kite and try your luck. The kite will fly backwards to your hand movements. Some switch handles so the pull-right steer-right control still occurs, but some frown on this. I prefer solo flying in the hand switching fashion but with out the twist. I run my lines to the stake and back and, leaving the handles in normal positions, hook the kite bridal to the lines backwards. (left on right and right on left) When I pull on the lines with the kite in front of me (upwind), the kite will fly up and away from me. It is very satisfying to fly a ground pass by my face at full speed. Just don't hit yourself. :) Try a slower flying kite in light wind to start. if you crash, just pick up the kite and toss it in the air again. Watching your kite from the back will give you a new perspective on how the sail and frame work together. Good luck.
