(1-800-827-6364) Message-ID: <4l8jgl$58r@newsbf02.news.aol.com> Sirs: It would be wise for those of you who think you are KITECRITIC(s) to pay heed to words in Alexander Pope's "An Essay on Criticism," which was first published in 1711. "But you who seek to give and merit fame, And justly bear a critic's noble name, Be sure yourself and your own reach to know, How far your genius, taste, and learning go; Launch not beyond your depth, but be discreet, And mark that point where sense and dullness meet." (lines 46-51) AND: "Some to conceit alone their taste confine, And glitt'ring thoughts struck out ar ev'ry line; Pleased with a work where nothing's just or fit; One glaring chaos and wild heap of wit." (lines 289-292) One issue that has not been mentioned regarding the "review" of the MYSL in American Kite is was T.B.K. being objective about the way that he received the product? Was there truth and honesty in the way the review was written or was T.B.K. trying to deliberately deceive the readers of American Kite? The lack of wisdom displayed in "criticism" by many in this particular situation is very disheartening. Is it any wonder then, why the sport of kiting is not growing? Have any of you wondered about other issues in kiting that should have priority over this issue. Why not put all of this energy into getting sport kiting recognized as an Olympic sporting event? Think about it! No one here is being a critic. Just asking for the truth and the facts. Today I recieved reprints of two T.B.K. reviews in the mail along with catalog parts from Becky's Kites. One of these (Winter 1995) was a review of the Stranger. TBK quoted the weight of the Icarex version (9.6 ounces) and the price of the Carrington version ($169). The review suggested that he flew the Icarex version. Now, if you don't know the difference, the Icarex Stranger is twice the kite the Carrington version is, and cost about twice as much. I would hate to see a new flyer go out with $169 and expect to by the kite that TBK reviewed. No, Larry, this is not being a critic. This is just asking for the truth.. dick barnes coupeville wa who will probably continue buying KiteLine Magazine even if ........ = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = From: Sancho Subject: Re: A Comment About Criticisms of American Kite Magazine Date: Mon, 22 Apr 1996 17:04:12 -1000 Organization: South West Sport Kite League and Fiesta Kite Ideas Message-ID: <317C48AC.436F@ix.netcom.com> dick barnes wrote: > > Larry, please, learn the meaning of passages before you quote them to the > world. Most of you posting to this have certainly wasted a lot of time closed inside your dimly lit computer rooms hashing out the plight of a company which may or maynot be here next year. Most of you who are here wasting this time are probably new to this sport. Some of the posts prove that. Some years ago, I recall people like yourselves complained that one magazine, which is now like sooooo many kite mfg companies gone the way of the dino, use to provide its reading public with kite reviews to mfgers who advertised in their mag. Of course none of the reviews were bad. All were glowing. Hummmmm? Is enthusiam being confused with overzealous marketing? Granted, you can believe none of what you read and half of what you see. (I think my dad said that) The review is one individuals perception. Some people like Androol and John Crabby, and a few spineless others think, I'm the most hateful person on the face of this planet. But others think, it's more like the Universe. Be that as it may, the point is if you as a reader feel this may have been an incorrect review then it is up to you to decide for yourself. If you need to be reinforced try for yourself, it's usually the best way. My personal opinion is that I felt it is a bold statement for American Kite to write this review and prove that they are objective. Here is another statment which I know my dad first said and it is true for the marketing stragety of anyone who is eager to get their product out with little or no cost. 'you get what you pay for' and 'garbage-in, garbage-out' Thank you for your support, now will someone unplug Andrills computer. = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = =
