The Synergy Deca "Affordable" seems to be quite well suited. I learned flying quads on a Rev II some 4 years ago. Had some hard time, as noone was there to show me. Later I tought other people without kiting experience how to keep it airborne in 10 minutes. Taking this and the Revs incredible durability this should qualify it as a good beginners choice, as well. May I say that the Rev still offers lots of fun after all those years? To me it is fun that the Rev is harder to fly backwards than a Synergy, as I take this as a challenge. Many things to learn, many tricks to try. Fly it on long and on short lines, indoors and in heavy winds, with one hand and with both. David Brittain does it with his feet. :-) Joachim = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = From: gerfen@hsc.usc.edu (Gary W. Go with either a Rev 1.5 or a Zip-Zap. The Z-Z is a soft quad that responds similarly to the Rev but really can't be damaged in a crash. It's a bit slower in moderate winds, but still a lot of fun! Another good point is that it's hard to hurt anybody else with a soft kite. Rev's can get out of control pretty easily in the hands of beginner, so please be very careful around spectators. Kids especially love to get close to the Rev. My wife had a hard time "getting it" with the Rev until after she flew our Quad 25. Newbies find Decas much easier for learning basic 4 line controls compared to a Rev. And the Deca does all the cool inversion and line roll up stuff that nothing else can do. If you want agility and speed, the Deca 31 is on par with a Rev II. It's a major sewing/engineering project, so the price is not cheap, but the kite is incredibly fun to fly and nearly impossible to break. Take it into the ground at full speed and it just bounces a bit. You can find the Guildworks crew at most major kite festivals if you want to give one of their sails a try. The kite is flexible in that it uses a flexible main spar allowing the shape of the kite to change in response to wind and kite speed - looks great with a pair of 45 foot tails! - and is very tolerant of abuse since it uses solid carbon rod for the leading edge. Not the easiest kite in the world to fly (no pain - no gain!) but the end result is worthwhile with a much more 'organic' and fluid flying style than a Rev or Zip-zap; more of a cross between a delta and a Rev in flight. Certainly as fast as a Rev, probably faster?
