The festival is called the Honolulu Festival/Paradise Cup and will be held at Sandy Beach in Honolulu, Hawaii March 8-10, 1996 and is an international festival of the largest proportion. I am very excited about this kite festival. We are running a European type of kite festival which will draw over 20,000 spectators from across Hawaii, Japan and the United States. Some of the features of this years festival will be 130 Japanese kite flyers from the Japan Kite Association (JKA). They will be bringing large Japanese kites with faces painted on them which are used for battling against each other from areas such as Hamamatsu and Shirone and other cities who are coming to Hawaii. Peter Lynn will be bringing the Megabite. The Megabite is the largest kite in the world at this time and Peter Lynn assured me that he has made it a little bigger! He has been able to make it bigger by placing zippered compartments in the kite to make it longer. There are a couple other things that we are doing very special at the festival. Team High Performance (THP) did some world events last year in New Zealand, Australia, and Canada and performed for over 200,000 people last year in 1995. This year, we will be doing two very special events one of which will be at the Honolulu Festival/Paradise Cup and the other at the World Cup. These special appearances will be performed to live Taiko Drummers. Taiko Drummers are Japanese drummers who drum in synchronized sound patterns with about 15-20 people simultaneously. Taiko Drumming is dramatic and we will be doing our kite ballet this year to live music. THP will be flying their newly introduced Platinum kite that have just made a smash hit at the Kite Trade Association International Trade Show in January 1996. Everyone has been talking about this kite. Another special feature of this year's event will be a full scale kite display in the center court exhibition area at the Ala Moana Center. This display will run for 10 days and we will be building Japanese kites with children from around the state in the exhibition area. There will be 2 different types of days at this festival. On Saturday, March 9th, will feature stunt kite activities and team flying as well as Taiko Drumming. Obviously, the biggest backdrop to the festival will be the world's largest kite and the Japanese battling kites which will be conducted on Sunday. Also, the largest Boy's Day Carp over 300 feet is coming to the field and we hope to get the world's largest carp onto the world's largest kite at Sandy Beach. You can be assured maximum media coverage including ESPN and a few other national publications. We are also guaranteed all of the statewide publications and news agencies who will be showing up for these events. The Honolulu Festival is spending huge amounts of money from Japan to put on this festival which includes other activities besides kites. They are bringing in horse back riders who will shoot archery targets while galloping down a street in Honolulu, near Ala Moana Beach Park. Also included are sumo wrestlers, Taiko Drummers, and different types of dancers. It is truly an East meets West type of event and we want as many people to show up as possible. I believe that you have never seen these type of activities in the State of Hawaii. We have kept the cost of the Paradise Cup down in support of the Honolulu Festival's organizing committee. The $ 75.00 fee for all participants in the Honolulu Festival/Paradise Cup includes the cost of the meals (2 lunches and a dinner), commemorative t-shirt, as well as a special gift from High Performance Kites. We know for sure that the entertainment from the Japanese kite flyers will be well worth the fee and we encourage everyone to come to the awards banquet/dinner which will be a very special event and a great opportunity to meet and spend time with the Japanese kite flyers. One note is that this type of festival with the Japan Kite Association is becoming harder to do because many of the Japanese kite flyers are in the 70-80 years of age bracket. These festivals may not exist 10 years from now as most of the knowledge and art will be lost with these special kite flyers. Take this opportunity to come to this years kite festival and enjoy the Japanese and American kite flyers as East meets West. Sincerely, Alan T.
