Although no articles appear in the Digest (it only started in 1981),
two other fires of importance caused problems in the past. In the middle 
1970's, a big fire in a phone office in Manhattan. New York caused loss
of phone service for over a week.

In the late 1940's, a big fire in one of the suburbs of Chicago caused severe 
disruptions in service also.
