NR #1998-078: For Immediate Release: Westminster-West Appoints Michael Scott Horton to Faculty by Darrell Todd Maurina, Press Officer United Reformed News Service (August 3, 1998) URNS -- Westminster Theological Seminary in California has announced the creation of a new masters degree in historical theology and the appointment of Dr. Michael Scott Horton as its primary faculty member. Horton, a minister in the United Reformed Churches in North America, is best known as the host of the nationally-broadcast "White Horse Inn" Christian radio program, co-founder of Christians United for Reformation, and vice-president of the Alliance of Confessing Evangelicals. Currently completing a postdoctoral program at Yale Divinity School with Drs. Nicholas Wolterstorff and George Lindbeck, his doctoral degree was earned in 1996 from Wycliffe Hall in Oxford and the University of Coventry. "Michael has had exposure not only to academic life in England but also in the Ivy League in the United States at its highest levels, and has come away with a renewed commitment to Reformed orthodoxy," said Dr. R. Scott Clark, academic dean at Westminster. "He brings a lot of significant backgrounds to our students that will be helpful to our students, he can talk about Colson and Neuhaus not only as people in books but as acquaintances and people he talks with on a regular basis." Horton, author of popular books such as "Putting Amazing into Grace," "The Agony of Deceit," "Power Religion," and "In the Face of God," is also editor of Modern Reformation magazine. "Michael has a reputation as a popular writer, he's earned that, but he has the capability of doing significant academic work and is doing that at Yale," said Clark. "He also brings a wealth of experience in pastoral ministry, he pastors Christ Reformed Church in Placentia, outside Anaheim, which is a vital and growing church that is also committed to being Reformed. He's really a remarkably good preacher." Clark said Horton's denominational affiliation was a factor in his appointment. Originally ordained in 1990 in the Reformed Episcopal Church, Horton was briefly a Christian Reformed minister in 1997 before his church joined the United Reformed Churches in North America while he was studying at Yale. "All of our faculty have to be members of confessionally Reformed denominations," said Clark. "We have a large United Reformed presence on our faculty, and we certainly viewed it as a positive thing he is United Reformed."
