---------------- OUR DAILY BREAD Friday, Aug. 11, 1995 ---------------- READ: 1 Corinthians 15:50-58 WAITING ON DEATH ROW "Death is swallowed up in victory. O death where is your sting?" - 1 Cor. 15:54-55 Rusty Woomer was waiting on death row just 11 days before his execution when he received a visit from Chuck Colson. He was not afraid to die, but he told Mr. Colson that a sense of fear came over him when he thought about meeting God. He was not worried about being punished for his sins because he was confident that Christ had forgiven him. But he was awed at the thought of meeting the One who possesses a power, a radiance, a purity, and a love beyond anything we can imagine. Rusty Woomer lived his final days knowing the precise date of his death and exactly how it would occur. Chuck Colson commented that even though few of us know when and how we will die, we are all on death row. Unless Jesus comes, even the most devoted Christian will have to pass through the valley of the shadow of death. This is a solemn thought. When we contemplate what God is like, we tremble at the thought of meeting Him. Yet we can also rejoice. Because Jesus Christ died for our sins and rose again, death is defeated. It can't hurt us. Rusty's testimony as he faced death is thrilling. He died rejoicing. So can we. -- Herbert Vander Lugt What awe engulfs our sinful soul To contemplate God's purity! We could not bear such holy love Were not Christ's death our surety. -- Dennis J.
