The California Coalition for Life is sponsoring a week long prayer event in front of 100 abortion mills around the state. Community- based churches are being approached to sign-up as sponsors and to encourage participation in a non-confrontational event which utilizes the most potent weapon we have aga inst abortion: prayer! For more details, call California Coalition for Life, 714-761-6455. A nationwide week-long prayer event would be awesome, wouldn't it? - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - (2) VERMONT ABORTION SUPPORTERS CLAIM RELIGIOUS DESCRIMINATION Malcolm and Susan Baker are a Catholic couple who live in St. Albans, Ver- mont. They own a small print shop. A while ago they received an order to print membership forms for an organization that calls itself Catholics for a Free Choice. (This is a minuscule front group funded primarily by the abortion industry.) When the Bakers realized that the order came from a pro-abortion group they refused to print the forms. Vermont `Catholics' For a Free Choice filed a complaint with the Vermont Human Rights Commission charging religious discrimination. The Vermont Human Rights Commission upheld the charge! Saying that the Bakers should be required to print pro- abortion material is like saying a Jewish printer should be required to print material for the American Nazi Party or a black printer should be required to print material for the Ku Klux Klan. Now the A.C.L.U. has entered the case. Are they defending the rights of the Bakers not to be forced to print material they find abhorrent? Don't be silly. Of course not. They are suing the Bakers and seeking a court order forcing the Bakers to print the pro-abortion material. If the Bakers lose they will not only be ordered to print the pro-abortion material, they will have to pay the attorney's fees of the ACLU lawyers who are suing them. They are being defended by the Catholic League for Religious and Civil Rights, which is a Catholic equivalent of the Anti-Defamation League of B'Nai B'rith, Free Speech Advocates, a pro-life legal defense organization, and Christian Advocates Serving Evangelism, about which I nothing except what can be inferred from the name. The Catholic League for Religious and Civil Rights, 111 Presi- dential Boulevard, Suite 227, Bala Cynwyd, PA 19004. The Catho- lic League is a Catholic equivalent of the Anti-Defamation League of B'Nai B'rith. Just as the ADL defends other people besides Jews, the Catholic League defends other people besides Catholics. For example, it has been involved in some Equal Access to schools cases involving Protestant students who want to meet for Bible meetings on school property on the same basis as other student clubs. (Contributions are tax-deductible.) Free Speech Advocates, New Hope KY 40052. It is a pro-life legal defense organization. It is a project of Catholics United for Life. New Hope, KY is a small town, so that is the complete mailing address. (Contributions are tax-deductible.) Christian Advocates Serving Evangelism is a group of Evangelical Protestant lawyers who defend Christians and Christian values in the courts. The Louisiania State Assemblies overrode a gubenotorial veto of a pro-life bill outlawing nearly all abortions except in the case of rape or incest - and those must be reported to the police with 3 days. Needless to say, the bill is tied up in the courts, awaiting the federal pronouncement on the Guam and Utah state laws restricting a woman's ability to kill her child. All Congressmen's and Senators' offices can be reached via the Congressional switchboard at (202) 224-3121. The White House Comment Line is 202 456-1111. The people who answer the phones simply note the position the caller states. They do not take down arguments. People should put their arguments in their letters, but if they call they should just state their positions. One could also write to Vice President Quayle, Old Executive Office Building, Washington, D.C. 20501, asking him to use his influence in the Administration to have President Bush keep his promise and veto the bill. Just remember: Before the Civil War abolitionists were outraged that it was legal to own other humans beings as chattel slaves. They were even more outraged when Fugitive Slave Laws required local offiials in the North to help track down escaped slaves and return them to bondage. Even during the war, northern soldiers were often threatened if they did not return slaves that had fled to their camps for refuge. In the same way, it is bad enough that the killing of unborn human beings is legal. It is far worse when our tax money is used to promote this killing. Some argue that to not provide federal money to provide abortions means that only the rich can obtain "safe, legal abortions." However, no woman, neither rich nor poor has the right to kill her child. There is also strong evidence to indicate that these same organizations (Planned Parenthood, etc.) specifically target the poor for their abortuaries - of course they want the government to pick up the tab. What is worse is that during the entire time the Title X funding has been in the courts, these same organizations have continued to use our tax dollars to destroy the unborn. Will any of this money be returned? Once the president suspended the funding, why did these organizations continue to take our tax dollars? - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - (4)For the Western Pennsylvanians: PROJECT MULTITUDE ``What have you done? Hennepin County Medical Center will not appeal yesterday's ruling in favor of Oliver Wanglie, whose wife, Helga, has been in a personal vegatative state for more than a year, said Dr. Michael Belzer, hospital medical director. "It's not a situation that we're entirely pleased with. On the other hand, we'd pusue it in an appropriate and sensible manner and we did," Belzer said. "We made our request for in independent review from the court and we'll abide by the court decision." Doctors at the county-owned hospital had argued the woman had no hope of recovery and had asked a judge to appoint an independent conservator, who could authorize them to take Mrs. Wanglie off the respirator keeping her alive. District Judge Patricia Belois ruled yesterday that such decisions are best left to family members when they are competent. Wanglie "Is in the best position to investigate and act upon Helga Wanglie's conscientious, religious and moral beliefs," she wrote. The Wanglie case is considered unique because family members rarely argue against doctors' advice to remove life-support. When disputes arise, normally it's because doctors refuse family requests to terminate life-sustaining care. "I think she'd be proud of me," Wanglie said after the ruling. "It's the doctors' job to sustain life, not to snuff it out,' said Wanglie, 87, a retired lawyer. "You recall what Hitler did in Germany? He killed of all the elderly people, the sick people, like they were weeds." Wanglie and his wife of 54 years are devout Lutherans. Mrs. Wanglie is a minister's daughter. Wanglie said he and his wife believed life should be sustained as long as possible. However, Mrs. Wanglie never made her wishes known in writing. Three days after this judgement, Helga Wangle died peacefully. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Quote of the month: "...I think that when statesmen forsake their private conscience for the sake of their public duties, they lead their country by a short route to chaos." -Sir Thomas Moore to Cardinal Woolsey in _A Man for All Seasons_ - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - ----------------------------------------------------------------------- | Credits: | | | | Many thanks to readers Eric Ewanco, Ed Gehringer, Marty Helgesen | | and Phil Sevilla, | ----------------------------------------------------------------------- end v1n8
