AKA "Abortionists try to sway City Police" (As per a May 22, 1991 Article in "In Pittsburgh" - Vol 7 Number 40) It seems as if the City Police are being requested to choose sides in the question of "Operation Multitude" and the Fulton Building abortuary. In an effort to "obtain relief" for their clients who are attacked by sidewalk councelors, the Women's Health Services staff asked City Councilman Dan Cohen to broker a meeting between themselves and the Police Department. This meeting took place in February, and it was asked that a "safety zone" be created in front of the Fulton Building to prevent demonstrators from physically approaching those entering the clinic. AN AGREEMENT WAS REACHED, but the pro-abortion forces feel that the agreement is not being enforced. The meeting was held in Police Chief Mayer DeRoy's office, and according to Councilman Cohen, those involved were: Dan Cohen, City Councilman Police Chief Mayer DeRoy, Pittsburgh Police Commander Patterson, Pittsburgh Police Assistant Commander Aubrecht, Pittsburgh Police Janet Catov, National Abortion Rights Action League (NARAL) Mary Littman, Director of Women's Health Services Robert Young, Manager of the Fulton Building Barbara Stern, Office Manager of the Fulton Building Pro Abortion participants in the meeting contend that a bargain was struck in which NARAL would provide several clergymen from the Religion Coalition for Abortion Rights (RCAR) who would act as approved escorts for clients seeking entry to the abortuary. The Police would be provided with photographs of these escorts. Commander Patterson said that it was his understanding that the sidewalk councelors of Operation Multitude were to have equal access to the women as they walked to the building's doors. The abortionists feel that this would defeat the whole purpose of the agreement, as among other things, their clients have to contend with sidewalk councelors promising "We'll take care of your baby" and urging things like "Don't kill your baby." Ms. Littman says this clearly violates the purpose of the "safety zone" set up in the meeting with Chief DeRoy. Kim Frances of RCAR agreed. Cohen's quote was this: "I respect the right to demonstrate under the First Amendment, but when persuasion becomes coersion the police must step in to prevent it. Women who come to the clinic after arriving at an emotionally difficult decision must not be assaulted or physically intimidated." Commander Patterson insists that the understanding was to allow one person from each group to accompany the girls to the clinic. "Our position is that we can't take sides," and "My main objective is to provide safety for everyone," he said. "Here here!" for Commander Patterson. What the abortionists are requesting is direct police involvement to protect their business at the Fulton Building abortuary. Let us not forget that Dan Cohen and his allies have tried to use the power of the City to support their own agenda, and specific businesses that are morally reprehensible. They may well try again. Notice also that none were permitted at the meeting to represent the interests of those who make horrible promises like "We'll take care of your baby." Remember also, that those promises are kept. How about Cohen's? "In Pittsburgh" is noted for its extreme pro-abortion, pro-gay, pro-feminist position. In the article, those entering the clinic are always referred to as 'clients', and the two sides of the abortion issue are always 'pro-choice' or 'anti-choice.' All attempts of prolifers, such as "waving models of plastic fetuses in the faces of those who seek to use the clinic..." are summed up as "attacks" on their "clients." I can send a copy of the article to anyone who wants it. Many thanks to Eric Ewanco for spotting this piece of news "from the other side." - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -
